Surgical services center reopens after $3 million in upgrades, new surgeons
May 17, 2018
After nearly $3 million in equipment upgrades and a new team of surgeons to boot, the Raleigh General Hospital Raleigh Medical Complex has reopened its surgical services.
A full array of outpatient surgical procedures will be offered at the complex, including endoscopy (upper and lower colonoscopies), gallbladder and appendix surgeries, biopsies, arthroscopy (joint examination), orthopedic surgeries, urology surgeries and general surgery.
“Our main goal in opening the surgery center was to be able to afford an outpatient an opportunity to come to a single site for everything — pre-op testing, X-ray, laboratory studies,” said Dan Shelford, assistant chief nursing officer at Raleigh General.
Shelford said surgical services were offered at the complex for a number of years, but when several physicians left the area, replacements were not immediately found. To make operations more efficient, staff was relocated back to the main campus.
Now, with eight new, long-term surgeons on board, Shelford said the main hospital was at capacity with surgical procedures.
“The whole target of this is to offload the volume from the main campus.”
He said the re-opening of the surgical services will decrease the amount of time patients have to wait for elective surgeries.
Emergency surgeries will still take place in the main hospital setting.
“This is providing them a place to get elective procedures done in a timely fashion by a set of highly skilled physicians.”
Procedures will be conducted on the fourth floor of the complex, where a majority of the physicians are already located. Shelford said many patients will already be familiar with the setting.
Patients will be screened for appropriateness of outpatient surgery. Higher risk patients will still need to be treated at the main hospital in case of emergency.
New surgeons include Dr. Scott Killmer, general surgery; Dr. Angela Dolganiuc, gastroenterology; Dr. Syed Siddiqi, gastroenterology; Dr. Blake Weeks, podiatry; Dr. George Charron, orthopedics; Dr. Faith Payne, urology; Dr. Gordon Holen, orthopedics; and Dr. Husam Nazer, gastroenterology.
