Raleigh General Hospital Physician Receives Humanitarian Award

Dr. Herbert Emanuel Oye has been selected to receive the 2024 ACOS Humanitarian Award that is given to recognize members’ outstanding voluntary service to their community or state, the nation, and/or the international community.
Dr. Herbert Emmanuel Oye is a distinguished Endovascular and Vascular surgeon based in Beckley, West Virginia. With a career beginning in 1997, Dr. Oye has notably advanced medical care in various capacities. Born in Nigeria and having completed his elementary and secondary education there, he moved to the USA in 1980 to pursue higher education. He graduated with a BSc in Pharmacy from Texas Southern University in 1985, later obtaining his medical degree from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth in 1991.
Dr. Oye’s medical training includes his General Surgery Residency at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, followed by an Endovascular and Vascular Fellowship at the Arizona Heart Institute in 1997 under the mentorship of the renowned Dr. Edward B. Diethrich. Choosing to serve in rural Appalachia West Virginia, Dr. Oye has been instrumental in establishing and advancing Endovascular services, particularly at the United Hospital Center in Clarksburg and later at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital and Raleigh General Hospital in southern West Virginia.
Throughout his career, Dr. Oye has developed several Endovascular programs in the USA and Nigeria. His commitment to education is evident in his role as a preceptor for medical students and residents, enhancing their clinical and surgical skills. He has been actively involved in academic activities such as grand rounds, journal clubs, and conferences, notably organizing the Annual Endovascular Conference for Rural America and Africa.
Dr. Oye holds numerous leadership positions, including Chief Medical Director of the Bayelsa Specialist Hospital in Yenagoa, Nigeria. He is also the President of the International Society of Endovascular Specialists (Africa Chapter) and a board member of the Uzima Foundation and World Health Mission.
His international efforts extend to significant collaborations with hospitals and physicians in Africa, aiming to improve healthcare systems and expand Endovascular treatment options. Countries benefiting from his expertise include Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and others. His work emphasizes sustainable healthcare practices, particularly in preventative and curative measures for vascular diseases.
Married to Mrs. Euphemia Oye, Dr. Oye is a family man with five children, four of whom are also physicians, reflecting his and his wife’s dedication to the medical profession. Dr. Oye’s approach integrates technical proficiency with compassionate practice philosophy influenced by mentors like Dr. Dale Brancel, Dr. Edward B. Diethrich and many more. His innovative techniques in vascular surgery and his efforts to develop outpatient care facilities showcase his pioneering contributions to both local and global healthcare landscapes.
